Fagan managed to become a space marine only by sheer determination. The strain the process put on his body combined with the strain of the gene seed left him with both hearts badly damaged. This would have quickly ended his carrier but for the mentorship of another Librarian. His mentor took him in and explained to the young space marine that he was part of a long line of Librarians that felt personal glory lead to damnation and only by forsaking ones individual identity could they protect them selves from the ruinous powers. After a grueling 2 years in service to his mentor he was presented with the honor of taking on the active name of the line of Librarians and his mentor retired to the name of Martin. The effects of this honor were more then a simple name change though. As the ritual of naming concluded and his old name was wiped from Fagan’s mind it was like he could feel the millenia of honor and strength that had been associated with his new name fill his being. Miraculously not only were both hearts healed but he found him self even stronger and faster then before, and with an even greater drive to slaughter all the enemies of the empire. It is this overwhelming compulsion to full fill the promise of being one of the Fagan’s that has driven him to the level of skill that earned him a spot of the death watch.
Possible justification: A few thousand years of people praising Fagan the Storm Warden Librarian has created a small warp impression making the name a warp relic. That somehow this Fagan has lived for thousands of years has caused those few who speak his legend to elivate the name to minor warp spirit of the emperor.
